Girin Plastic Surgery, Collaboration in Orthognathic Surgery with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery Departments

Girin Plastic Surgery (Director Yoon Seung-kew, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist) has initiated a collaborative system between oral and maxillofacial surgeons and plastic surgeons to provide higher-quality medical services. 

Orthognathic surgery corrects the position and shape of the maxilla and mandible, improving function. Common indications include malocclusion, protruding jaw, long face, protruding mouth, retrognathia, and facial asymmetry.

Orthognathic surgery requires high-level skills to precisely correct malocclusion while avoiding the nerve lines in the facial jawbone. This necessitates the experienced techniques and extensive clinical knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists. 

Improving oral functionality is not the ultimate goal of orthognathic surgery. Director Yoon stated, "In modern times, various programs are often integrated with plastic surgery, among which the relationship between facial contouring and orthognathic surgery is notable. While both address facial form, they are distinctly different procedures. Facial contouring refines the cheekbones and chin, focusing on aesthetics independent of dental alignment, distinguishing it from orthognathic surgery."

According to Director Yoon, collaboration between plastic surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons can accurately address patient needs, offering high-level medical services that enhance aesthetic satisfaction and function. 

He emphasized, "Many people considering orthognathic surgery tend to accept post-surgical sagging. However, their satisfaction will increase significantly if they undergo follow-up consultations with the operating surgeon and participate in various sagging improvement programs."
