Hanyang University Medical Center’s clinic for Rheumatic Diseases was established in June 1989 as the first-of-its-kind in the nation and it is followed by Research Institute of Rheumatology wherein research and clinical activities could run in parallel.

Showing progressive development, the first Rheumatology Specialized Hospital in Korea opened in May 1998.

New prospects of Rheumatology clinics are constantly opening up as a result of development of brand-new methods for treatment and tests through cooperation between medical experts and biomedical scientists.

Arthritis and Rheumatism are still considered as either an elderly-onset disease or incurable disease. One would be surprised to know however, there are a hundred of divisions in categorizing arthritis and rheumatism from well-known diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Gout, Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis to unfamiliar diverse immunology diseases such as Scleroderma, Myositis, Vasculitis, Behcet’s Disease, Still’s Disease, and so forth.

Cancer Center

Cancer is a complex disease that involves countless interactions among specialized professionals for appropriate treatment. This multidisciplinary collaborative system is necessary to provide effective and efficient treatments for individuals with cancer. Accordingly, this unit coordinates and runs interdisciplinary management system to approach to patient-centered diagnosis and treatment.

The Cancer Center comprises of about 15 subdivisions – Liver Cancer Center, Thyroid Tumor Center, Musculoskeletal Tumor Center, Brain/Spine Tumor Center, Colon Cancer Center, Head and Neck Tumor Center, Gynecologic Tumor Center, Urologic Cancer Center, Pediatric Cancer Center, Esophageal Cancer Center, Gastric Cancer Center, Breast Cancer Center, Pancreatobiliary Cancer Center, Lung Cancer Center, and Blood Cancer Center. Cancer Education Center and Cancer Research Support Center are also included in this division to improve patients’ quality of life and to support cancer research respectively.

We strive for early detection and diagnosis of cancer, and to provide complex treatments including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy in a fast and effective way through patient-centered multidisciplinary management system. The best cancer treatment methods are being implemented by performing minimally invasive robotic surgery as well as by installing the new radiation treatment machine Novalis and by running Stem Cell Treatment Center.

HYUMC Robotic Endoscopic Surgery Center

Leading surgery using DaVinci-S robot to a great success in October 2008, HYUMC Robotic Endoscopic Surgery Center has begun operating in the earnest to implement robotic surgery along with endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery for cancer patients as well as diverse surgical patients.

By collaborating specially with division of General Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, ENT, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and Orthopedics, successful implementation of minimally invasive surgery method to a diverse and complex surgery demonstrated a significant increase in the degree of patient satisfaction.

Recently, this type of robotic surgery is known worldwide for its excellence resulting to an increase in foreign patients’ demand. Now robotic surgery is actively being performed domestically and is implemented in almost all fields operated via abdominal approach.

Stem Cell Transplantation Center

The center is equipped with practices such as large-volume leukapheresis system with CD34+ cell isolation system, computerized cell-freezing system with cryopreservation system, cell thawing system, and advanced research equipment for molecular genetics. The collection, storage, and transplantation of stem cells through their mobilization also are being carried out.

The Center comprises a group of professional teams that are divided into Hemato-oncology, Infectious Diseases, Diagnostic Laboratory, Radio-oncology along with transplant ward expert-nurses, transplantation coordinators, social workers, stem cells collection expert-nurses, Nutrition team, and researchers-in-charge of disposal, freezing, and storage of stem cells.

Novalis Tx Center

At Novalis Tx Center, we closely interact and cooperate with cancer specialists and staff at the Cancer Center to offer a variety of cancer treatments. Novalis Tx specifically targets body organ diseases without damaging the normal surrounding tissues. Novalis Tx center has the global standard 4-dimensional radiosurgery system with state-of-the-art technology that integrates various cancer treatment planning in one system.

The Novalis Tx, a combination machine of Varian Inc.’s Rapid arc and Brain Lab Inc.’s Novalis, is an advanced medical system for radiosurgery and radiotherapy. This fusion of a variety of technologies, Novalis Tx, which is a highly precise system that enables to finish treatment in a more accurate, targeted, safer, and faster way than any other recent radiotherapy machines, offers relative alleviation of patients suffering from cancer radiotherapy.

Cardiovascular Center

“Hybrid Operating Room newly opens and now performs treatment for arrhythmias”

Interventional procedures on great arteries as to thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm and on atrial septal defect are safely being performed at the Hybrid Operating Room for any congenital heart diseases that may require surgical treatment, such as aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease, atrial septal defect, and patent ductus arteriosus.

Implantable cardiac devices such as a permanent cardiac pacemaker (PCP) or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) maintain hygiene through thorough inspection. For this reason, implantation procedure is being performed under aseptic condition more than ever.

We are totally equipped with the latest electrophysiological test and treatment equipment and with arrhythmia experts for handling interventional procedures on cardiac arrhythmias that require treatment procedures, such as supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and flutter, and ventricular tachycardia. Those procedures are now actively being performed.
