National Cancer Center has disseminated proton therapy during the past nine years. The proton therapy is one variety of cancer treatments using Cyclotron. The definite advantage of the proton therapy is the accuracy that the sharp proton beam is transferred to the tumor directly without scattering radiation along the way so called ‘Bragg peak’. The therapy could not spread widely due to the high costs, but in September last year, health insurance starts to cover live cancer, brain tumor, eye cancer, lung cancer, etc with childhood cancer which is already covered. Daeyong Kim, director of the proton center, said proton therapy is an effective treatment that can minimize side effects of the pediatric cancer patients.
