Presentation titled, ‘Robotic single-incision total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis for rectal cancer in ulcerative colitis’
Professor Kim Ho Seung of the Department of Surgery at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital (Director Lim Soo Mi) was awarded the Outstanding Video Presentation award at the Seoul International Symposium of Surgical Oncology, which was held on the 11th.
Professor Kim Ho Seung’s presentation, titled ‘Robotic single-incision total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis for rectal cancer in ulcerative colitis,’ was delivered at the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery (Professor Kim Gwang Ho, Noh Kyung Tae, Kim Ho Seung) at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital, and the academy awarded him in recognition of the positive surgical results.
The presentation showed a case in which a robotic single-incision total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis was carried out by a Davinchi SP (single-port robot).
In the case of anterior colon resection and ileocapsular anastomosis, several holes had to be drilled in previous robot and laparoscope surgery because the entire colon and rectum, which take up a lot of space in the abdominal cavity, had to be removed.
However, if a single-port robot performs the surgery, it can be done through an incision of about 3 to 4 cm in the navel, and quick recovery can be expected along with excellent cosmetic results and a reduction in post-operative pain.
Professor Kim Ho Seung said, “Currently, Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital is actively carrying out single-port robot surgeries using the Davinchi SP. In the future, we will continue to research methods for treating colon and rectal diseases in a minimally invasive way through single-port robot surgery.”
Professor Kim is a surgeon specializing in operations for colorectal cancer, rectal cancer, peritoneal cancer, and anal diseases, and has received the Mentor-Mentee Award from the Korean Surgical Society and the Excellence Poster Award from the Korea Society of Coloproctology.
