Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital announced on the 29th that Professor Moon Hye-sung, Director of the Robotic Surgery Center (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), has reached a milestone of 2,000 robotic surgeries performed. This accomplishment was achieved 14 years after Professor Moon's first robotic surgery took place in 2010.
Notably, out of the 2,000 surgeries, 1,566 were high-complexity single-incision surgeries, including 1,120 using the Da Vinci SP system. In July last year, Professor Moon set a world record by completing 1,000 Da Vinci SP single-incision robotic surgeries, maintaining her position as the world's most prolific surgeon in this field.
Professor Moon is not only renowned for the overwhelming number of surgeries that she has performed, but also for her globally recognized surgical skills. Even during her tenure at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, she was frequently invited to various international conferences in countries including the USA, Australia, China, and Taiwan, where she demonstrated robotic surgeries and delivered lectures to doctors worldwide, sharing her extensive clinical experience and expertise in robotic surgery.
Moreover, in recognition of her world record number of SP single-incision robotic surgeries, she is scheduled to give an educational lecture at the World Congress of Robotic Surgery in Orlando, USA, from June 20 to 23, 2024.
The total number of robotic surgeries performed at the Robotic Surgery Center of Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital under Professor Moon’s leadership has reached 4,202. The center has achieved remarkable results not only in the area of gynecology but also in surgery and urology, including Korea’s first single-incision bladder removal surgery, the world’s first single-incision myomectomy for multiple uterine fibroids, and the first single-incision surgery for adhesive endometriosis. Consequently, representatives from many countries are visiting the center to learn these surgical techniques.
At the forefront of Meditech, Professor Moon Hye-sung has been attracting attention for performing minimally invasive surgeries on large uteri and fibroids, which previously could only be treated through open surgery. These procedures reduce pain and provide faster recovery, increasing patient satisfaction levels.
She states that "This achievement reflects our relentless research and efforts to provide the best treatment to patients, in line with Ewha Medical Center's founding spirit of service and sharing. We will continue to strive to achieve optimal healing, safe recovery, and patient-centered medical care."
