Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine (Director Lee Jin-ho) conducted the '2024 Jaseng Medical Academy Internship' program for international medical students.
The 'Jaseng Medical Academy Internship' is a clinical training program that broadens overseas participants' understanding and learning of Korean medicine. This year's internship program included six medical and pre-medical students from U.S. universities, including UCLA, and five students from the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) in the UAE, which has been exchanging interns with Jaseng Hospital since 2019.
The internship program included lectures on Jaseng Hospital's Korean medicine treatments, such as Chuna therapy and Motion Style Acupuncture Treatment (MSAT), integrated medicine lectures, observing medical staff consultations, and tours of key facilities, including the Jaseng Medi-Bio Center. Participants also engaged in Q&A sessions with Korean medicine doctors at Jaseng Hospital and experienced being a Korean medicine doctor for a day.
Interns showed great interest in Jaseng Hospital's non-surgical treatments, particularly MSAT and Chuna therapy. MSAT involves inserting needles into key acupoints of the patient and inducing passive or active movement. It quickly reduces pain by releasing excessive muscle tension and promoting synovial fluid secretion. Chuna therapy corrects not only abnormally twisted spine and pelvis but also surrounding muscles, bones, and ligaments to balance the body.
Dr. Lee Jin-ho, Director of Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine, stated, "Integrated medicine, which complements the shortcomings of modern medicine with other medical systems, is gaining attention, and interest in Korean medicine is also growing. We will continue to operate this internship program to help international medical students lead the globalization of Korean medicine and integrated treatment."
Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine is the first in Asia to be accredited as an official continuing education provider by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), offering continuing education for medical professionals from over 30 countries. Since 2017, it has also conducted clinical training for 244 students and medical professionals from 18 countries. The hospital is working on a clinical training project for the globalization of Korean medicine in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. It also hosts the annual 'Jaseng International Conference' to explore future development directions for Korean medicine.
